ABOUT US
TRUTH X COMMUNITY
At Satsang Yoga Charleston, we honor the ancient tradition of yoga as a path to good health, mental clarity, and a kind heart. Our name, *Satsang*, comes from Sanskrit, combining Satya (Truth) and Sanga (Community), reflecting our belief that when we come together, we create a space to reveal and embody our highest potential. Since 2005, our yoga shala has been a place of depth, growth, and connection—a haven of truth.
Through creative and intelligent sequencing of yoga asanas (postures), we integrate the profound science of sound vibration, using breath, mantra, rhythm, and music to guide our practice. Our flowing Vinyasa-style Hatha-Raja classes serve as a potent metaphor for finding calm within the ever-changing waters of life. Through movement, sound, and classic dharma (teachings), we nurture both physical and psychological well-being. The experience is further enhanced by adept hands-on assists, creating a unique space for personal transformation.
We believe in the power of stretching, releasing, strengthening, singing, laughing, and connecting. There are no mirrors, no dress codes—just a welcoming community of dedicated students passionate about yoga and personal growth. In each class, we come together to reflect the possibility of living in truth, authenticity, and joy, empowering one another to live fully.
Yoga at Satsang brings peace not only to you but also to the atmosphere, radiating healing into the world. Join us, and experience the profound benefits for body, mind, and spirit.
At Satsang Yoga Charleston, we honor the rich teachings of our lineage, drawing on the wisdom and blessings of the revered teachers who have inspired our practice. Their presence is felt in every class, shaping the way we guide our students toward truth, compassion, and freedom. These teachings, teachers, and their blessings are interwoven into every class we offer, infusing our space with love, devotion, and wisdom:
LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU
“May all beings everywhere be happy and free.” This powerful mantra reflects the heart of our teachings, and through our practice, we seek to extend happiness and freedom to all.
Jivamukti Yoga Method
An integral part of our sadhana (spiritual practice), the Jivamukti Yoga Method is our lineage. Co-founded by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984, this method focuses on yoga as a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings. The global Jivamukti community—comprised of teachers and students—keeps ancient yogic scriptures alive while working to protect animals and the environment. Sharon and David’s teachers, through their blessings, have helped carry these teachings to us.
Shyamdas
Known as the “Ambassador of Bhav” (divine mood), Shyamdas had a unique ability to relate to everyone he met with an overflowing good mood and deep connection. His teachings in Bhakti Yoga and the Path of Grace were rooted in the Pushtimarga tradition of 16th-century philosopher Vallabhacharya. A beloved friend to our community, Shyamdas’ impact lives on through his audio recordings, publications, and his example of joy and devotion. His work continues to inspire many of our teachings at Satsang Yoga. Shyamdas left his body in 2013, but his influence remains ever-present.
Ram Dass
A spiritual pioneer and guiding light for millions, Ram Dass (formerly Dr. Richard Alpert) met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji), in 1967, who gave him the name "Ram Dass," meaning “servant of God.” His groundbreaking book Be Here Now sparked a spiritual awakening in the West, and his teachings on mindfulness, compassion, and loving awareness are core to many of our classes. We regularly listen to his audio recordings, and his wisdom continues to guide us as we walk the path of yoga and self-discovery. Ram Dass passed away in 2019, but his message remains timeless.
Swami Nirmalananda
The “Anarchist Swami” lived a life of simplicity and silence, practicing deep self-rule and non-violence. A naturalist and spiritual teacher, Swami Nirmalananda spent 11 years in silence in the B.R. Hills of Karnataka, India. During this time, he corresponded with leaders and communities, encouraging them to live joyfully and peacefully. His letters, teachings, and life example remind us of the power of stillness, simplicity, and joy, values we incorporate into our practice at Satsang Yoga Charleston.
Dr. M.A. Jayashree
A scholar and teacher of Sanskrit, Dr. Jayashree has enriched our understanding of ancient Indian texts and the spiritual power of sound. Her profound knowledge of Sanskrit, Vedic sciences, Indian culture, and music, along with her melodious voice, continues to inspire and uplift our practice. Her teachings help deepen our connection to the roots of yoga, and her influence resonates through the mantras and sound vibrations we use in class.
Shri Brahmananda Saraswati
Known as Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D., Shri Brahmananda Saraswati was a master of both Eastern and Western medicine. He founded the Yoga Society of New York in 1958 and Ananda Ashram in 1964, where his teachings still thrive. As a scholar of Sanskrit and sound vibration (Nadam), his dedication to uniting science and spirit has greatly influenced our understanding of yoga and its profound potential for healing. His legacy continues through his many writings and the lasting impact of his work on our community.
